Fat Cat Gets Stuck In Doggie Door

The Oregon Humane Society recovered a 20-pound stray cat that was found halfway stuck in a doggie door Wednesday in Gresham.

The Humane Society said the cat was trying to steal food from a home that had put out food for its own cats.

“I heard quite a ruckus when I went into my garage,” said Jadwiga Drozdek, who cares for six cats at her Gresham home. “It was hilarious to see this big cat struggling to get in. I helped him out of the door and gave him a plate of food on the patio.”

The cat was described as "unusually large" by the Humane Society and was nicknamed “Goliath."

If the cat is not claimed in three days, the Humane Society said it will neuter the cat and make it available for adoption.

Fat Cat Owner Steps Forward

A jumbo-sized stray cat that got caught in a dog door while scavenging for food was reunited with his owner at the Oregon Humane Society on Thursday.

The cat was nicknamed Goliath, but his name is really Hercules, according to owner Geoff Ernest.

Gresham resident Jadwiga Drozdek found the feline stuck in the door Wednesday. She helped him free and gave him a plate of food on the patio.

Ernest said he had a house-sitter when he went to Seattle for a lung transplant several months ago and Hercules took off. According to Ernest, Hercules lost five pounds during the time he was missing.

While at the Humane Society, Hercules was diagnosed with Feline Immunodeficiency Virus, similar to HIV in humans.

The society said cats can live years with the virus but that owners should keep them indoors to keep the illness from spreading.

Hercules has had his 15 minutes of fame. He has piled up oodles of hits on Youtube and other Web sites.

The Humane Society said it nicknamed the cat Goliath “because of his huge girth and a head that seems to be the size of a basketball.”

Portland, OR – Everyone’s favorite large-bodied cat—an unusually “stocky” stray tabby caught wedged in a doggie door while scavenging for food— was reunited today with his estranged owner at the Oregon Humane Society (OHS).

Nicknamed Goliath because of his huge girth and a head that seems to be the size of a basketball, the cat was captured by a kind homeowner who found the stray struggling to free himself from a too-small doggie door. "I heard quite a ruckus when I went into my garage,” said Jadwiga Drozdek of Gresham. “It was hilarious to see this big cat struggling to get in. I helped him out of the door and gave him a plate of food on the patio.”

The cat’s real name is Hercules, and he went missing six months ago, said owner Geoff Earnest (see picture, above). "There was a house sitter when I was away in Seattle for a lung transplant and the cat took off and never returned. I am so happy to see him now."

While at OHS, Hercules was diagnosed as carrying Feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV), which is similar to human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). "There's no reason not to adopt an FIV cat. With good care they can enjoy a a long life," said Susan Mentley, OHS director of operations. "But they should be kept indoors to prevent the virus from spreading to other cats."

Last year, OHS found home for over 4,500 cats, the vast majority of which were strays. Every cat adopted by OHS is neutered or spayed and receives an identifying microchip so that the owner can always be located.
